The Caribbean Vulnerable Communities (CVC) is currently running a bold new digital series that is shaking up the conversation around sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) in Jamaica. Breaking Barriers, now streaming on YouTube, is a thrilling short-form series that dives headfirst into the complex and often taboo issues facing Jamaican youth today.
Raw, unfiltered, and unapologetically bold, each episode of Breaking Barriers follows relatable young characters navigating real-life scenarios that touch on topics such as sexual consent, STI prevention, access to health services, body autonomy and dealing with discrimination. The series gives a face and a voice to the silent struggles many young people endure while navigating sexual and reproductive health issues.

What sets Breaking Barriers apart is its immersive format. Every episode is followed by a dynamic discussion segment where guests unpack the issues raised. These post-show conversations go beyond surface-level commentary as they create the environment for a deeper understanding of the challenges and encourage open, stigma-free dialogue in a society where many of these topics are still considered taboo.
Developed under the Strengthening Access, Inclusion and Leadership for Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SAIL-SRHR) project, the series is part of CVC’s ongoing commitment to reaching young people with relevant, relatable, and rights-based information. The SAIL-SRHR initiative targets Jamaica’s southeastern and southern health regions, areas identified as having some of the country’s most significant SRHR gaps. This includes urban centres such as Kingston and St. Andrew, as well as, rural parishes such as St. Elizabeth, St. Thomas, Clarendon, Manchester and St. Catherine.

“Breaking Barriers is a critical part of how we connect with young people where they are, that is online, on their phones, and in their real lives,” said Andrea Campbell, Technical Programme Officer at CVC who oversees the implementation of the SAIL-SRHR project. “It’s not just about entertainment, it’s about education and empowerment. The stories are inspired by real experiences, and the discussions afterward give viewers the tools to navigate their own challenges,” Andrea added.
The series aims to demystify SRHR topics, combat harmful myths, and spark intergenerational conversations that can lead to better health outcomes for youth. By using storytelling and digital engagement, Breaking Barriers also challenges institutional norms and highlights the urgent need for inclusive policies and services that affirm the rights of all youth.
Episodes of Breaking Barriers premieres Friday nights at 8pm Jamaica time on Barracks Entertainment’s YouTube page and is then available on CVC’s YouTube channel. Tune in, join the discussion, and help create a Jamaica where young people are informed, supported, and empowered to claim their rights.
