The Jamaican recipient of the Caribbean Vulnerable Communities’ (CVC) Safe Space Grant, Woman INC., says the assistance provided has helped the organisation strengthen several critical services to help women in crisis.
WOMAN INC. is a voluntary, non-profit, non-governmental organisation (NGO), that has been operating in Jamaica for over forty years. The NGO provides assistance to victims of rape, incest, domestic crisis, sexual harassment at the workplace, human trafficking, and domestic violence. The organisation also provides services such as a Crisis Shelter; a 24-hour Hotline; a Public Education Programme; and a Legal Reform Committee which lobbies and advocates for Legislative change.
Through CVC’s Safe Space Grant, Woman INC. was able to train 20 Hotline volunteers. “The grant gave us the resources we needed to provide renewal and support techniques for our counsellors and 24 hour hotline volunteers. The ability to respond to hotline callers and to serve victims and survivors is a critical lifeline in the height of crisis situations. The training and refresher sessions ensures that a sufficient number of eligible persons are available at any point in time, since this is the lifeblood of the service we provide,” said Angela Clarke, Woman INC Public Education Committee Chair.
Woman INC. also usesd the resources provided by the CVC Safe Space grant to undertake renewal sessions with safe house and crisis centre clients. “Woman Inc recognises that survivors of gender based violence need ongoing support to help them to regain their independence. This collaboration (with CVC) aims to contribute to advancing women’s empowerment by ensuring that the women participating in the programme would have access to a trained psychotherapist who would help them in the healing process,” Angela Clarke said.
The Woman INC. Public Education Committee Chair says the CVC partnership is also helping the organisation achieve its mandate. “This partnership has helped us to continue our thematic focus and priorities which is the overall response to vulnerable groups in relation to domestic violence, victims of rape, survivors of early childhood sexual abuse, and sexual harassment at the work place.
CVC’s Safe Space Grants are made available through funding from the Global Fund. The grants provide resources to organisations to help cater to the needs of members of key population groups. The grants also help these NGOs establish physical or virtual safe spaces.
